how long?
Poetry
Mia Casas

we had been given twenty years.
rising temperatures,
storm warnings,
it’s okay, we have time.
right?

we were given twelve years.
severe drought,
sea levels rising on the coasts,
no need to worry,
that’s plenty of time.
right?

we are given five years.
10,967 species going extinct,
crops are struggling to grow,
there is still time.
right?

oceans will rise tremendously,
people displaced from their homes.
the soil will dry up,
crops are unable to grow.
we do not have time,
the time is now.
